Lipid Panel Explained: LDL, HDL, Triglycerides & Risk
8/18/2025
A lipid panel reports total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C, triglycerides, and often non-HDL-C or ApoB. Screening can be non-fasting; TG rise after meals.
Interpreting results
- LDL-C: main atherogenic particle; lower is better at higher risk.
- Non-HDL-C: useful target when TG are high.
- Very high TG increases pancreatitis risk.
Educational plan
- Lifestyle: fiber-rich diet, activity, weight management, tobacco cessation, alcohol moderation.
- Risk-based discussion: therapy depends on overall risk.
- Medication classes (not a prescription): statins (moderate vs high-intensity), ezetimibe, PCSK9 inhibitors, icosapent ethyl in select adults.
- Repeat typically in 4–12 weeks after a change.
