Non-HDL Cholesterol: A Powerful, Practical Target Especially When Triglycerides Are High
9/4/2025
Non-HDL cholesterol equals Total cholesterol − HDL. It captures all atherogenic particles (VLDL, IDL, LDL). People search: "non HDL 160", "apoB vs non-HDL". When triglycerides are elevated, non-HDL is often more robust than LDL alone.
Typical targets (education)
- For many risk categories, non-HDL target is roughly LDL goal + 30 mg/dL (varies by guideline).
- ApoB is another strong measure; many clinics use either depending on availability.
How to lower non-HDL
- Lifestyle: fiber, plant sterols, weight management, physical activity, stop smoking.
- Discuss medications when indicated: statins first-line; consider ezetimibe or PCSK9 inhibitors for additional lowering.
